Cromlix: The History Behind One of Scotland’s Most Luxurious Wedding Venues
Hidden away in the beautiful Stirlingshire countryside, just a few miles outside Dunblane, there is a driveway that leads to somewhere rather special.
Cromlix.
Today, Cromlix is regarded as one of Scotland’s most luxurious country house hotels and an extraordinary setting for a Scottish wedding. But behind the beautifully designed bedrooms, spectacular gardens and five-star hospitality is a fascinating story stretching back centuries.
It’s a venue with history, royalty, family connections, a private chapel and, of course, a rather famous Scottish owner.
For us at Fresh Entertainments, venues like Cromlix represent everything that’s special about weddings in Scotland: incredible surroundings, genuine Scottish character and the opportunity to create a celebration guests will remember for years.
So, what’s the story behind Cromlix?
A History Stretching Back Centuries
Although the mansion we recognise today is Victorian, the history of Cromlix goes much further back.
Records relating to the lands of Cromlix can be traced back centuries, with the estate eventually becoming associated with the Drummond family.
The origins of the present house date to 1874, when a residence was built for Arthur Hay-Drummond.
However, disaster struck only a few years later when much of the original house was destroyed by fire.
The house was subsequently rebuilt around 1880, creating the foundations of the magnificent Victorian country house we see today.
Further extensions followed in the early 1900s.
It’s a wonderful example of a Scottish country house that has evolved over generations rather than simply being built as a modern hotel.
And there’s a little royal history in there too.
King Edward VII visited Cromlix in September 1908.
Not a bad name to have in the old guest book.
From Family Home to Luxury Hotel
For generations, Cromlix remained a private family residence.
That changed in 1981, when the house was converted into a country house hotel.
Importantly, much of the personality of the original house remained.
Rather than becoming a large, anonymous hotel, Cromlix retained the feeling of arriving at a grand Scottish home.
And that feeling remains one of its greatest attractions today.
Walk through Cromlix and you don’t feel as though you’re in a conventional hotel.
There are fireplaces, beautiful rooms, artwork, historic architectural details and windows looking across acres of Scottish countryside.
It feels intimate.
Personal.
And wonderfully removed from everyday life.
The Private Chapel
One of the most remarkable features at Cromlix is its private chapel.
Dating from the original 1874 development, the chapel forms part of the historic fabric of the estate.
For couples getting married at Cromlix, it provides something incredibly unusual.
You can stay in a luxury Scottish country house, walk through the grounds to an intimate historic chapel, exchange your vows and then continue the entire celebration without leaving the estate.
There’s something undeniably romantic about that.
The chapel is particularly beautiful for smaller ceremonies, where candlelight and the historic surroundings can create an atmosphere that would be extremely difficult to reproduce in a modern venue.
Then Along Came Andy Murray…
Cromlix’s modern history is inseparable from one of Scotland’s greatest sporting figures.
Sir Andy Murray grew up in nearby Dunblane, and Cromlix already had an important place in his family’s story long before he owned it.
The Murray family had celebrated special occasions at Cromlix for decades.
Andy Murray’s grandparents held their silver wedding anniversary there in 1982, followed in later years by golden and diamond anniversary celebrations. The hotel also became the setting for birthdays, blessings and several Murray family weddings.
So when Cromlix became available, the connection was already deeply personal.
In 2013, Kim and Andy Murray acquired the estate.
This wasn’t simply a celebrity purchasing a luxury hotel and putting his name above the door.
It was someone investing in a place that was part of his childhood, his local community and his family’s history.
Cromlix reopened in 2014 following investment in the property.
Then came another major chapter.
Kim & Andy Murray Reimagine Cromlix
In 2023, Cromlix entered a new era.
Kim and Andy brought the hotel under their own management and embarked upon an extensive refurbishment.
Kim Murray played a major role in the creative direction of the transformation, working alongside interior designer Suzanne Garuda and Scottish craftspeople, suppliers and designers.
The idea wasn’t to turn Cromlix into another ultra-formal luxury hotel.
Quite the opposite.
The aim was to retain the grandeur and history of a Scottish country house while making it feel colourful, comfortable, contemporary and relaxed.
And that combination is perhaps the secret to modern Cromlix.
It’s luxurious without feeling stuffy.
You’ll find beautiful fabrics, bold colours, floral influences, antiques and contemporary artwork sitting alongside the original character of the Victorian mansion.
It’s grand — but it’s also somewhere you’re encouraged to settle into an armchair and feel at home.
Andy & Kim’s Own Wedding
There’s another lovely connection between Cromlix and its owners.
When Andy Murray married Kim Sears in 2015, their wedding ceremony took place at Dunblane Cathedral.
And afterwards?
Their wedding reception was held at Cromlix.
There’s probably no greater endorsement of a wedding venue than the owners choosing it for one of the biggest days of their own lives.
34 Acres of Scottish Countryside
Then there are the grounds.
Cromlix sits amongst approximately 34 acres of private woodland and landscaped gardens.
For weddings, that creates almost endless opportunities for photographs.
A couple can disappear into the grounds with their photographer while their guests enjoy drinks back at the house and return with images that look unmistakably Scottish.
Depending on the season, the whole atmosphere of Cromlix changes.
Fresh greenery and flowers in spring.
Long evenings in summer.
Rich colours in autumn.
Frosty grounds, fireplaces and candlelight in winter.
Cromlix is one of those rare venues that can genuinely work beautifully throughout the year.
There’s Even a Tennis Court
Of course there is.
It would almost be wrong if there wasn’t.
Amongst the estate’s facilities is a tennis court — a rather appropriate feature given the identity of its owner.
It’s one of those fun little details that adds to the personality and story of Cromlix.
The Glasshouse
Food is another major part of the Cromlix experience.
The hotel’s restaurant, The Glasshouse, looks across the grounds and gardens and places a strong emphasis on seasonal Scottish produce and locally sourced ingredients.
It’s another example of the philosophy running throughout the property.
Modern luxury, but with a clear sense of place.
You know you’re in Scotland.
A Wedding Venue That Feels Like Your Own Country House
For weddings, Cromlix has another enormous advantage.
It can feel less like you’ve hired a wedding venue and more like you’ve invited your favourite people to your own private Scottish country estate.
Couples planning smaller celebrations can use one of the hotel’s beautiful private rooms.
For something much bigger and more private, exclusive-use weddings can take over the house, giving the wedding party use of the accommodation, entertainment spaces and grounds.
That completely changes the atmosphere of a wedding.
There’s no procession of strangers wandering through reception.
No other wedding happening in the function room next door.
Instead, the people around the house are your family and friends.
For a luxury wedding, that’s difficult to beat.
Why Cromlix Works So Well for Wedding Entertainment
From our perspective at Fresh Entertainments, a beautiful venue is only one part of creating an incredible wedding.
The other part is what happens inside it.
The laughter.
The speeches.
The music.
The first dance.
The packed dancefloor.
And those moments guests are still talking about at breakfast the following morning.
At a venue such as Cromlix, the entertainment should complement the surroundings rather than overpower them.
That’s why we believe in creating a polished, elegant setup that looks like it belongs in a luxury Scottish wedding venue.
From professional wedding DJ and hosting through to interactive entertainment, saxophone, photobooths, audio guestbooks and special enhancements, everything should feel like part of the wedding rather than something that’s simply been placed in the room.
And when the formalities are over?
That’s when Cromlix can become a very different place.
Because even the most elegant Scottish country house needs a packed dancefloor eventually.
What Makes Cromlix One of Scotland’s Best Wedding Venues?
It’s difficult to reduce Cromlix to one feature.
Is it the Victorian mansion?
The private chapel?
The 34 acres of grounds?
The five-star hospitality?
The interiors?
The food?
The connection to Andy and Kim Murray?
Or simply that wonderful feeling of disappearing down a country driveway and leaving the outside world behind for a couple of days?
In reality, it’s probably all of them.
Scotland certainly isn’t short of spectacular wedding venues, but Cromlix occupies its own little corner of the market.
It combines the romance of a historic Scottish country house with the standards expected of a contemporary five-star hotel.
It’s historic without feeling old fashioned.
Luxurious without feeling intimidating.
Exclusive without losing its warmth.
And Scottish without resorting to clichés.
